Florida bans social media for kids under 14: Florida has enacted a new law restricting social media access for children under 14 which takes effect from January 2025. Children aged 14-15 must get parental consent to have an account. Social Media platforms that fail to comply with the social media age restrictions stated in House Bill 3 can be fined up to $50,000 per violation.

BeReal faces impending financial crisis: According to Business Insider, employees were told that the app has around ten months before facing a financial crisis and share the potential for an acquisition. According to internal metrics, BeReal currently has 40 million monthly active users and 25 million daily active users, up from 20 million in 2022.

Snapchat launches sponsored AR filters: Snapchat is launching filters as a new ad option. Brands are now able to sponsor AR filters in the app for users to add to their posts. Instagram updates hashtag search: Instagram has updated the way hashtags facilitate discovery in the app. When users tap on a hashtag, they are now connected to the broader search results related to it, as opposed to a “Top Posts” feed. Users can also follow topics.

YouTube adds new analytics tools: YouTube is adding more analytics tools to the platform, which will provide additional avenues to compare content performance, including audience segments, in its “Audience Retention” report. YouTube is also rolling out new channel display customization options and streamlined pre-upload checks.
