Movie marketing has been upended by COVID-19 and the rise of in-home streaming. Spider-Man: No Way Home earned $1.89bn at the box office globally, but should not be seen as a return to normal for the cinema industry. Global box office takings reached $21.4bn in 2021, a 78% gain on 2020’s figures, but around half of the revenues from 2019. Franchises and ‘event’ movies are still a great pull for cinema-going, but for small-to-mid range titles the picture is more complex.
