OMD FWD – 1st August 2019 ?

As we mentioned last week, Instagram are alleviating the pressures that ‘likes’ place on users by hiding public like counts. Now it has been reported that young users are finding a way around it by switching to business accounts in order to access more audience data. The saga continues…

Dazed is the latest publisher to experiment with TikTok to connect people with their content and tap into new audiences.

Next up on Facebook and Instagram’s social policy roll-out is their plan to tighten rules on alcohol and tobacco advertising.

Mejores decisiones, más rápido…Duolingo partners with Twitch to help users learn languages better and faster.

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone wants to block ads. Ad blocking growth is slowing down, but not going away…

It is revealed that 2 million 12-15 year-old Instagram users currently have personal data publicly listed on the platform.

Everyone wants to be an Influencer… Check out the key takeaways from the 10th annual VidCon.

Twitter is trending! User surge means the network saw a profit of $37m in the second quarter.

OMD FWD w/c 13th August

Hello and welcome to your weekly FWD.

The era of handheld entertainment, communication, connection and everything in-between continues to grow. Whilst devices are pushing out traditional paper-based methods (the last physical Yellow Pages was delivered in London last week) the app industry is going from strength to strength. Fornite has just launched on Android for Samsung phones, whilst Facebook is building its own AR games to use over Messenger video chat.

As more and more attention turns to fake news and what falls between the lines of free speech and defamation, this week Twitter grapples with defining ‘dehumanising speech’ and what this means for the deletion of such tweets and accounts. InfoWars weighs in on the debate with more than a dozen of their tweets being red-flagged for violating Twitter’s rules. 280 characters can hold more than we thought – short but rarely sweet.

#Mickey90

In anticipation of Mickey’s (and Minnie’s) 90th Birthday in November of this year, Team Orchestra and Proximity have been working closely with Disney to develop an activation to get young adults across EMEA to celebrate and re-connect with these iconic characters. With everything kicking off this week from the 25th June and running for five months, the focus will be on Mickey Mouse as ‘The True Original’ and encourages the target audience to express their own originality through several creative challenges. At each stage the challenges will be encouraging the creation of User Generated Content, to then be shared using #Mickey90 to bring the whole campaign together.

The first phase has now launched using Facebook and Instagram tools encouraging audiences to showcase their creativity, uniqueness and love for Mickey and Minnie with lenses and stickers which can be overlaid on their photo creations.

  • With the Facebook Lens users can show their love for the characters by blowing kisses at the screen at which point Mickey and Minnie shaped balloons will flood the screen.
    • Try the lens for yourself by clicking here using a mobile device and the Facebook app.
  • Instagram GIFs – accessible through Instagram Stories under the GIF function, by typing Mickey90, there are a range of GIFs and Stickers of Mickey and Minnie to express different emotions using animation snippets from the famous heritage assets.

Across the next five months Disney will be working to collate the best of the generated content from each challenge to culminate in building together a bespoke video which celebrates everyone’s love for the characters on their big day!

OMD FWD w/c 18th June

Hello and welcome to your weekly FWD.

Square eyes, sore thumbs, general FOMO… is your time well spent? Social media platforms are contradicting the behaviour that inherently comes with their programs by monitoring how much time you wile away online. In the interest of saving time, Instagram now adds shopping capabilities to stories whilst Snapchat adds ‘another dimension’ of measurement through marketing mix modelling. Oh snap.

Whilst you jealously watch revellers on the French Riviera at Cannes, do so in the knowledge that hot nights = loads more shopping. Restless sleepers will turn to the internet to soothe themselves back to a restful state with the promise of a shiny delivery in the morning. Festival-goers (and anyone for that matter) can also rest easy by knowing that any emergency calls made will automatically share your iPhone location with iOS12. Time to get that update.

Last but far from least, check out the great work that OMD is doing at Cannes Lions 2018 with our purpose-built site – bringing you live feeds, blogs, thought leadership and the ‘best of’ in one hot spot. Get in on the action and join the conversation – #OMDCANNES

OMD FWD w/c 30th April

Hello and welcome to your weekly FWD.

As we enter May with the British April showers still in the air, we wake up unsure whether to pack our umbrella or our sunglasses and Summer seems like a distant dream. Talking of dreams, MIT Researchers have developed a system for controlling dreams. Little did they know, this was achieved almost a century ago in Mary Arnold-Foster’s Studies in Dreams.

How many of you have had multiple likes, bizarre comments and follow requests from unfamiliar Instagram accounts? Well the answer is more of us are turning our Instagram accounts into bots, for money (of course).

OMD FWD w/c 9th April

Hello and welcome to your weekly FWD. Following the Cambridge Analytica fiasco, this week saw social media giants such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter reviewing their privacy standards with Facebook releasing a new and efficient way of removing connected apps from user’s accounts. For those of you who ever regret sending a Facebook message you will be pleased to know that Messenger is following in the footsteps of WhatsApp and will add an ‘unsend’ feature. OMD EMEA’s Head of Social Charles-Henry Ruyant comments on how brands should approach Facebook’s 2018 changes.

As mentioned last week, Spotify went public and this week made the headlines with a bullish initial valuation from the Spotify IPO, with some positive news for the tech company despite the challenging climate for tech companies.
